Abstract

Aging is something natural and irreversible. With the passing of the years, the individuals suffer several changes in the physical, psychological, biological and social aspect. The visual function also suffers changes with the aging and the vision quality deteriorates itself with the passing of the years. These deficits affect directly the senior citizen, but indirectly involve also his/hers close relatives, friends and health professionals. The functional losses make the senior citizen fragile to the eyes of the society and also to him. However, the health professionals should lean over every one of the individual, studying their health problems and the causes of them in a way to increase or improve his well-being. The health professional also should help the individual to adapt to a new situation of life, brought by the aging, and that is translated in physiological, moving and sensorial changes. A lot has to be done to minimize the prejudices caused by the loss of visual acuity, in this stage of life. How has the individual to be helped at a clinical, ergonomic and gerontological level is the question that is important to give an answer. As we are before a society more aged, it is important to move the visual health professionals to the importance of a good advising respecting simple visual habits that can be extremely useful to senior citizens. However, it is suit also refer that the visual rehabilitation is a promising field of work to ophthalmic opticians.
