Reabilitar a (proxim)idade

Reabilitar a (proxim)idade

Abstract

With the current ageing of the population and the problems inherent to it, namely discrimination and prejudice increasingly present in our society, new needs for social readjustment arise. Traditional establishments to support older people reflect these same stereotypes, the result of an increasingly divided and insensitive society. Most of these buildings are not prepared to facilitate decent and essential support for these people, making it difficult for them to provide, contributing to making them inappropriate and impersonal. In this final work for the master's degree, it is intended to study the way through the dialog between architecture, place and aging, to rehearse an architectural alternative that focuses on the needs of the elderly. It seeks to understand what impact architectural spaces have in relation to our perception, as well as to study ways of working the perceived space, with the objective of contributing to a less painful transition between the house and the contingent inhabit, in order to contribute to a life with quality, comfort and well-being. The place for this essay was Terceira Island, in Azores, which, taking into account a particular culture and tradition, led us to study how to harmonize the new construction with the landscape and with the preexisting physical structure. Thus, it is proposed an architectural essay, careful and sensitive, for a residential support for the old people, which prioritizes their needs and thus adapts to the compulsive change, centered on the familiarity of the scale, the domesticity of the spaces, and therefore, to count on the possibility of memorial activation of potential users.
