A cidade depara-se com a necessidade de se transformar e adaptar-se a novas realidades. Os centros históricos encontram se abandonados e cristalizados, produzindo espaços vagos e com edifícios obsoletos, sejam eles, correntes ou “patrimoniais”. O confronto entre a memória e a sua transformação pode colocar sempre muitas dúvidas. Desta forma, propõe-se o reuso dos vestígios da cidade de Santarém e do seu centro histórico, através das estruturas pré-existentes, como suporte conceptual. Procura-se uma utilização dos seus vestígios, e dos espaços vagos, como elemento estrutural que permita o aumento da acessibilidade e permeabilidade. Para que tal fosse possível, foi necessário cartografar e analisar a evolução dos espaços da cidade, as suas memórias e a sua metamorfose. A análise dos vestígios e das transformações existentes servem para informar a vocação dos lugares, e o estudo de casos de referência para uma melhor compreensão das melhores práticas urbanísticas e projectais, em relação ao caso de estudo. A cidade pode ser vista como um objecto em constante mutação, em que as necessidades do futuro se conciliam com as estruturas do passado. A memória pode ajudar a delinear, o seu caminho através das suas qualidades intrínsecas, a qual tem sempre um contributo, e quando passiveis de reuso adquirem uma nova dimensão, ou seja, um recurso que não desperdiçamos.

The city is facing the need to transform and adapt to new realities. The historic centers are abandoned and crystallized, producing vacant spaces and obsolete buildings, whether current or “patrimonial”. The confrontation between memory and its transformation can always raises many doubts. In this way, it is propose the reuse of the city of Santarém vestiges and its historic centre, through pre-existing structures, as conceptual support. The aim is to use its remains, and vacant spaces, as a structural element that allows for an increase in accessibility and permeability. For this to be possible, it was necessary to map and analyze the evolution of the city's spaces, its memories and its metamorphosis. The analysis of existing traces and transformations serve to inform the vocation of the places and the study of reference cases for a better understanding of the best urban and project practices, in relation to the case study. The city can be seen as an object in constant mutation, in which the needs of the future are reconciled with the structures of the past. Memory can help us to delineate its path through its intrinsic qualities, which always have a contribution, and when they can be reused, they acquire a new dimension, that is, a resource that we do not waste.
