Design e Literacia Financeira:

Abstract

Knowing how to correctly manage our personal finances is a fundamental issue in our daily lives. It is certainly an essential element that, whether we like it or not, we have to deal with it daily. Still, young adults are among the segments with the lowest financial literacy rate in Portugal, which points to a failure in education that results in inappropriate financial behaviors and attitudes. This research aims to promote financial awareness in young portuguese adults, through visual communication supports, which aim to increase financial knowledge and contribute to more responsible financial behaviors and attitudes. We consider people aged between 18 years (the age at which a person is legally considered an adult) up to 30 years (age of the last average calculated considering the time they leave their parents’ home). In this study, in a first phase, a literature review was carried out in order to collect knowledge, understand the weaknesses and user needs. We also implemented a preliminary study through surveys through online questionnaires. In a second phase, we follow an active investigation, of design nature, using methods specific to design. The creation of a website stands out, as the central support of the entire project, evaluated through a high-fidelity prototype, through a usability study. As a result, the set of supports created are intended to facilitate the understanding of issues related to the management of personal finances, as well as raising awareness among young adults in Portugal for the importance of financial literacy in their lives.
