Trabalho à margem : imigração e economia informal em Portugal

Abstract

This dissertation analyzes the relationship between immigration and the informal economy within the context of the Portuguese labor market. The study explores how modern economies have increasingly come to rely on migrant labor to meet the demands of low-skilled and precarious jobs in essential sectors. Through a historical and contemporary analysis, the research highlights how the country’s economic and social transformations have driven the insertion of migrant workers into the informal sector, reflecting the particularities of the Portuguese economy. While informality offers immediate solutions, it perpetuates the vulnerability, exclusion and exploitation of workers, especially migrant workers. Thus, this dissertation contributes to a deeper understanding of the forces shaping the informal economy and the essential role that immigration plays in this process.
