Abstract

Introduction: Due to the intentional or accidental physical contact between players, contact sports are identified as an etiological factor in the development of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Competitive athletes experience higher levels of physiological stress due to the intensity of training and the psychological stress associated with competition preparation. Alongside physiological stress, the demanding weight categories often result in fluctuations in estrogen levels. Estrogen has a dual effect on TMD, and when associated with the type of sport, it can enhance the prevalence of TMD in athletes. Objectives: To investigate the prevalence of TMD in female combat athletes and to verify the prevalence of TMA syndrome in competitive combat athletes. Materials and Methods: The sample were collected in person through a questionnaire composed of 20 quick-response questions (incorporating diagnostic criteria for the research of temporomandibular disorders (RDC/TMD)) and an observational examination of the extra-oral and intra-oral type. Results: The sample of the present study consisted of 20 individuals, 10 competitive athletes and 10 recreational athletes. The majority of competitive athletes did not present TMD (80%), while most recreational athletes presented group II TMD (60%), though this difference was not statistically significant (p=0.170). In both groups, the diagnosis of bruxism was mostly absent (Competition - 90%, Recreation - 70%), with results not being statistically significant (p=0.582). There was no presence of headache in this sample. None of the participants in the competitive athletes' category had a probable diagnosis of TMA syndrome. Conclusion: The association between the degree of competition in female combat athletes and the presence of signs or symptoms of TMD is not statistically significant. It was not possible to establish a causal relationship between the presence of TMD and the practice of combat sports given the present variables and sample size.
