Abstract

ABSTRACT - Nowadays, the importance of aquaculture in general and fish culture in particular as a source of food is undeniable. The great recent development of aquaculture resulted in an increase in productivity but also in an increase in the occurrence of various pathological processes. Pathologies of infectious nature assume a place of prominence by having a big economic impact. Epidemiological surveillance of infections is an essential element of animal health policies at a world-wide level. Both the European Union’s legislation and the World Organisation for Animal Health’s (OIE’s) publications related to aquaculture cover this theme, providing indications such as which diseases should be subjected to surveillance and what type of surveillance should be conducted in different situations. This paper’s main objective is to do a bibliographical revision of the theme “epidemiological surveillance in fish culture”, giving special emphasis to the various standards responsible for the regulation of this health strategy in the sector. Additionally, some pertinent questions will be raised concerning the practical application of epidemiological surveillance at production site level.

Actualmente, a importância da aquicultura em geral e da piscicultura em particular como fonte de alimento é incontestável. O grande desenvolvimento recente da aquicultura resultou num aumento da produtividade do sector mas também num aumento da ocorrência de diversos processos patológicos. As patologias de natureza infecciosa assumem um lugar de destaque por terem um grande impacto económico. A vigilância epidemiológica das infecções é um elemento essencial das políticas de sanidade animal a nível mundial. Tanto a legislação da União Europeia (UE) como as publicações da Organização Mundial de Saúde Animal (OIE) relativas à produção aquícola abrangem este tema, fornecendo indicações como quais as doenças que devem ser vigiadas e que tipo de vigilância deve ser efectuada em diferentes situações. Este trabalho tem como principal objectivo fazer uma revisão bibliográfica da temática da vigilância epidemiológica em piscicultura, dando especial ênfase às várias normas responsáveis pela regulamentação desta estratégia sanitária no sector. Adicionalmente, serão levantadas algumas questões pertinentes acerca da aplicação prática da vigilância epidemiológica a nível das explorações.
