Abstract

Corporate Social Responsibility is not a new issue. It has for long been discussed within the question of what responsibilities a company should have beyond those to their shareholders, that is, pursuing profit. Today we observe the emergence of a new paradigm based on the growing recognition that the private sector not only can but also should do more to combat poverty, preserve the natural environment whilst providing the engine for economic growth. This can be achieved thought the integration of social responsibilities, as a strategically investment, in the heart of its management practices and operations. CSR is still an evolving concept with different approaches being adopted in accordance with precise situations. This has led to the proliferation of a multitude of voluntary initiatives adopted by companies as an attempt to respond to these new expectations about their role in society. One of these initiatives is the implementation of Social Accountability 8000 (SA8000), a voluntary standard that aims to certify ethic workplaces around the world. The present work aims to examine what is CSR all about; what are the driving forces behind it, and what has been achieved so far. Through the analyses of SA8000 principles and procedures we would like to expose an instrument that, although narrow in scope, is very complete in implementation and, in our view, could be used as a benchmark to develop more broad CSR instruments. Finally through the analysis of a few case studies on the implementations of SA8000 in different countries, industries and facilities we try to ascertain the validity of this standard as an instrument to achieve CSR.
