Timeout no andebol de alto rendimento

Timeout in elite handball

Timeout no andebol de alto rendimento

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to analyse the team timeout (TTO) calling in elite handball. Two research lines are discussed in the literature review, presented in the Chapter 1. The first research line describes the momentum phenomena and relates the performance oscillations during the competition to the effect of antecedent events; the second research line refers to the coaches’ verbal behaviour during the competition. Three empirical studies have been conducted to achieve the main aim of this research. In the study, presented in the Chapter 2, the context of TTO calling was characterized according to the game location, game period, match status and goals scored and allowed in the last five ball possessions before TTO. The analysis of the quantity and structure of the instructional verbal behaviour of handball coaches during TTO in two different contexts: when the coach calls TTO and when TTO is called by the coach of the opponent team was the aim of the study presented in Chapter 3. The forth chapter includes the analysis of the effect of TTO calling on the team’s performance indicators (defensive and offensive efficiency and points difference) according to different competitive contexts, characterized by game location, game period and match status. Results of three studies included in this thesis allow characterizing TOE as a strategic choice of the coach in the crisis scenarios, with a mostly positive shortterm effect on the team’s performance. The thesis finishes with suggestions for future research and recommendations for the training process.
