Hipocalcemia subclínica na vaca leiteira

Abstract

ABSTRACT - Subclinical Hypocalcemia in Dairy Cow - As the name sugests, the main objective of this dissertation is the achievement of a study of a very common disease in dairy cows in the postpartum period: a subclinical hypocalcemia. It is a metabolic disease that affects cattle, especially animals with high milk production, which is the lowering of serum calcium and a subsequent number of other problems, such as decubitus and paresis, among others. The etiology is varied but the disease is associated with the delivery and early lactation, causing an exponential increase in needs for calcium (Ca). Despite being a very common disease in cattle, they are not unique, since it occurs to a much lesser extent, in sheep and goats. More severe Hypocalcemia (Ca <5 mg/dl), is a serious problem from a economic point of view, since if it is not readily controlled can lead to loss of the affected animal, on the other hand, subclinical hypocalcemia plays a more insidious role leading to loss of production and fertility. In this assay were selected for collecting blood samples from 12 animals on a dairy farm in the area of Ribatejo, which seeks to determine the occurrence of hypocalcemia in the herd, as the severity and effects of disease, particularly in milk production, the method of delivery and reproductive performance (number of services, days open, etc.). Of the 12 animals analyzed eight had values below 0.8 mg/dl of serum calcium, lying at the time of sample collection in a state of hypocalcemia more precisely subclinical hypocalcemia (Ca 5 – 7,9 mg/dl). The results show a high prevalence of the condition, the order of 64% of the sample, and also reveal that, despite this high prevalence in the herd parameters under study did not demonstrate significant differences between cows with normal serum calcium levels or who had deficits.
