Transplante renal felino

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease is the most common kidney disease in dogs and cats, and leads to an irreversible and progressive loss of kidney function and/or structure. Organ transplantation represents the improving of surgery techniques (particularly vascular anastomosis) and immunology, which without these tools it would not be possible today. Kidney transplantation in cats is a possible treatment for chronic kidney failure and irreversible acute kidney failure, and it is being increasingly used all over the world. Its goal is to prolong and improve the quality of life of the patients that do the procedure, and to be successful, it is critical to ascertain if the patient in question is a good receptor candidate. Despite being an expensive option, which involves many medical cares, renal transplantation has proven to be an effective method to treat cats with kidney disease. The purpose of this thesis is to present the aspects related with feline kidney transplant, so that in the future it could be part of the animal clinic in our country. However, many studies are still required in this area, once the experience is so little.
