The study here presented is focused on the relationship between basketball coach and basketball player. Its aim was to describe the coaches’ and players’ behaviours and perceptions, concerning the quality of personal interactions and considering the status of the player – effective player or bench player. The coaches’ behaviours were investigated during the training sessions, according to the stage – junior or senior - and to the result of the game – after winning it and after losing it. As to the players, it was also investigated if their behaviours were influenced by their status, stage or competition results. One hundred ninety nine male basketball players (junior and senior) participated in the study. Ninety two training sessions were recorded (seventy after winning a match and twenty-two after losing it). The perception of the nature of the relationship between coach and player was measured using the questionnaire IITA (Player-Coach Interaction Inventory). The coach’s behaviours were analyzed using two observation systems: the SOTA (Observation System of Coach Behaviour) and the SOCA (Observation System of Affective Behaviours). The player’s behaviours were measured using the SOTA, the OBEL (Observation System of Athlete Behaviour) and the SOCI (Observation System of Inappropriate Behaviours). The main results were that: the profile of coaches perception varied according to the status, but not to the stage; the functional behaviour of the coaches varied according to the status and stage; the affective behaviour of the coaches was influenced by the stage and status; the disturbing behaviour of the players varied in relation to the stage, the status and the competition results. The results, in an overall analysis, have shown that as to the process of teaching/training, the objective relationship (significant behaviours of the coaches and players) and the subjective behaviours (perceptions about the relationship) between coaches and basketball players were not homogeneous and the players haven’t also shown a consistent behaviour during training sessions.
