Abstract

Nature tourism finds the main motivation for traveling in the enjoyment of natural areas, in their observing and understanding, and from a strong desire to escape the urban environment (Cunha, 2009). The European market for nature tourism accounts for 22 million trips per year, growing 7% per year (Turismo de Portugal, 2007). Adventure tourism and sports tourism have been studied by several authors, notably regarding the typology of tourists (Beedie, 2003; Sung, 2004; Weber, 2001; Weed, 2008). In this context, the aim of this study is to determine the characteristics of tourism demand the Alqueva dam. We seek to know their motivations and needs; where the information is gathered; and the demand for activities in the largest artificial lake in the European Union. Identifying the characteristics of the consumers will be a valuable contribution to the construction of sport and tourism packages. It was used, as research instrument, a survey, previously validated, allowing us to properly characterize the sample, study their consumption habits and motivations, and determine the characteristics of the demand for tourism activities, and understand the deviations between the main groups. We noted that the main motivations for traveling to Nature relate to characteristics inherent to the Nature itself, as already observed by other authors (Cunha, 2009). As for the demand for tourism activities, we were able to identify a trend across the sample, related to the preference for socio-cultural activities. Still, we found that younger individuals and the more educated (Post-Graduated), are more likely to immersion in a physical activities and sports, during their traveling to Nature environments.
