Abstract

The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) determine whether the application of the Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ), which in the Portuguese version has the name of Questionário de Ambiente de Grupo (QAG) is a valid measure for estimating group cohesion, seeking, through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), ensure the psychometric qualities of the Portuguese version of the scale in the context of Portuguese football; (2) study the variability of cohesion suitable to some influential variables such as gender, age, years of practice and level of education of the football players. In this study participated 186 athletes males (N = 173) and females (N = 13), federated in football, with aged between 11 and 35 years (M = 15.21, SD = 3.09). With regard to the values of the model's overall adjustment resulting from the AFC, the final solution, with 12 items, presented an appropriate adjustment: χ²(50) =99.3; p< .000; χ²/df = 1.9; CFI= .9, GFI= .9, PCFI= .7, PGFI= .6, RMSEA= .07. The results of the reliability of the final solution of the QAG, consisting of 12 items showed internal consistency of α = 0.74 for the scale Integration Group in relation to social and α = .83. However, the analyses of some local indices of fit were not satisfactory. On the other hand, the individual variables studied influence group cohesion.
