Abstract

ABSTRACT - The present study, double-blind and placebo-controlled, used a sample of 14 female cats (Felis catus) (n=14) and had the following objectives: 1) To evaluate, through a behavioral approach, the influence of synthetic analogue of the F3 fraction of feline facial pheromone (F3) on the pre-surgical stress and post-ovariohysterectomy stress and pain; 2) To characterize the relationships between the following items: age, pre-operative hospitalization, surgery and dissociation times, and levels of stress (pre and post-surgical) and pain. 3) to report the inter-observer repeatability of stress and pain scales used. Animals exposed to F3 reported lower stress scores (pre and post-surgery) and pain. However, in none of these cases this difference was statistically significant. The results suggest an ineffectiveness of F3 in reducing the pre-surgical stress and the stress and pain levels after ovariohisterectomy. As for the inter-relationships studied, the results demonstrated the capability of ovariohisterectomy to exacerbate stress levels experienced by the feline patient, and inducing mild to moderate pain, facts which enhance the appearance of aggressive behavior. In addition, the results suggest that older animals (up to 24 months) have higher levels of post-surgical stress and that the degree of appetite after surgery is strongly correlated with the pre-surgical stress level. The stress and pain scales had an inter-observer repeatability of 64% and 89%, respectively.
