A cidade como personagem no cinema

A cidade como personagem no cinema

Abstract

ABSTRACT - The city is the man’s natural environment. It is his physical structure that gives him a center, an orientation and a placement, becoming the expression of his existential space. Each city has its own identity, expressed through architecture and urban space, as the outcome of the cultural memory of people. Film is the art of spatial illusion. What we see can be based on reality but its representation is always the effect of space manipulation, in order to achieve the intended image. The cinematographic narrative turns around characters and their interaction with each other and the surround space. When the city is used as a set, whether real or faked, it has an important role determining the actor’s movement through the delimitation of space. This makes its presence as significant as any of the main character. The main goals of this work are: to demonstrate the importance of the city in the cinematic space construction; to analyze how the theme of the set can be relevant in the visual telling of the script, even when the location is completely built in a “black box” studio or through a computer; and finally to prove the importance of production and set design in the construction of the city visual representation. One can conclude that film is only possible through the understanding of man’s physical space where he exists. On the other hand, today’s cities are the result of an urban and architectural conception that is also based on a scenic approach.
