Design de produto em biopolímeros. Objectos emergentes

Abstract

The products developed using biopolymers, bio-based and biodegradable polymers, are increasingly seen as alternatives with a huge potential. But these materials are still generally unknown or mistaken with other polymer based products. Therefore it becomes relevant to survey biopolymeric originated objects, aiming to know, analyze and understand what kinds of products they are and what other products may be embraced by this material innovation, trying to understand what their impact in Product Design might be. We approach these materials through their relevance towards Design and product designers, from the evidence of what exists, regarding the surveyed products, made from bio-based and biodegradable polymers, which we categorize in several families, according to parameters considered relevant, such as its material composition or functional capability, emphasizing on innovative products, not only regarding the materials used, but as well the ways in which the product is conceived, produced and used. We also reflect on the perspectives of several designers and professionals, on the new ways of thinking material, thus analyzing the state of the art, the opportunities and threats that the introduction of this material may bring in the next few years, namely, in Product Design and in the society, in general. We have concluded that innumerous products of biopolymeric origin already exist, throughout different sectors of application and that these materials are very important to Product Design, since they may affect deeply the life cycles of the produced objects, from the concept to the elimination of the product, so that they may enhance the consumer with greater power upon its choices, therefore changing several paradigms inherent to Product Design.
