Abstract

The genetic selection of maritime pine individuals for resin production is something that had already been thought of previously in Portugal. However, although it had economic relevance to justify it, it never came to fruition. The work in this thesis results from renewed interest in resin exploration. Hence, quantifying resin production in maritime pine clones in the Qualified Seed Producer Clonal Orchard, located in the Escaroupim National Forest, is one of the objectives of this work. We will also analyze the genotype/resin production relationship, identify the superior genotypes and analyze the relationship between resin production and the tree's dendrometric variables. The work was carried out in two areas of the clonal orchard - Area I, with 4 hectares and Area II, with 3 hectares - installed between 1970 and 1980. In Area I, 286 trees from 43 clones were identified for resin; in Area II, 284 trees from 36 clones were identified. The dendrometric variables of the trees were measured, the resin from the 2021 campaign was weighed, heritability in the broad sense was estimated and the genetic gain for the resin production characteristic was predicted. Genetic variability was detected, indicating that there is an opportunity for genetic improvement for resin production. The estimated values for heritability in the broad sense varied between 0,77 and 0,88, indicating the existence of strong genetic control for this characteristic. The selection of the 16 best clones allows us to predict a genetic gain of around 37%. A significant positive correlation was identified between resin weight and tree diameter.
