Abstract

Atendendo às consequências ambientais que atualmente enfrentamos, as cidades tornaram-se cada vez mais vulneráveis e suscetíveis aos efeitos climáticos, particularmente quando os seus modelos de expansão urbana privilegiam soluções artificiais e insustentáveis a estratégias naturais. Mais recentemente, como reação à crescente consciencialização dos valores prestados pela natureza para a qualidade e bem-estar de uma comunidade, emergiu o conceito de infraestrutura verde. Reconhecido como modelo ecológico compatível à expansão urbana, a sua aplicação pode ter um impacto positivo para o equilíbrio e sustentabilidade ambiental de uma região, assegurando, complementarmente, a satisfação das necessidades humanas. A zona oriental de Loures encontra-se presentemente num processo de reconversão e requalificação da sua frente ribeirinha, contudo, no seu interior urbano evidenciam-se um conjunto de ameaças agravadas pela expansão dos núcleos urbanos que acentuaram a fragmentação e descontinuidade da estrutura verde, condicionando, atualmente, a qualidade ambiental e de vida da população. No contexto específico desta região, a definição de uma estratégia para uma infraestrutura verde pode constituir um contributo para o desenvolvimento urbano sustentável como alavanca da proteção ambiental e da requalificação e restruturação urbana, articulando a sua organização e expansão com os interesses ambientais, ecológicos, sociais e económicos das gerações presentes e futuras.

Given the environmental consequences that we currently face, the cities have become increasingly vulnerable and susceptible to climate change effects, particularly when their urban sprawl models favor artificial and unsustainable solutions instead of natural strategies. More recently, as a reaction to the growing awareness of the values provided by nature for the quality and well-being of a community, the concept of green infrastructure emerged. Recognized as an ecological model compatible with urban expansion, its application can have a positive impact on the environmental balance and sustainability of a region, assuring, in addition, the satisfaction of human needs. The eastern zone of Loures is currently undergoing a process of reconversion and requalification of its riverside front, however, in its urban interior there are a number of threats aggravated by the expansion of urban centers that accentuated the fragmentation and discontinuity of the green structure, conditioning, currently, the environmental and life quality of the population. In the specific context of this region, the definition of a strategy for a green infrastructure can contribute to sustainable urban development as a lever for environmental protection and urban requalification and restructuring, articulating its organization and expansion with the environmental, ecological, social interests and economic needs of present and future generations.
