Abstract

ABSTRACT - LABELING OF ORGANIC PRODUCTS IN PORTUGAL: A CONFORMITY ANALYSIS - The work undertaken was due to the growth in the production and consumption of organic products, driven by rural development policies in the European Union. European Commission legislation over the years has played a crucial role in defining and refining the objectives, principles, and control requirements of organic production. In response to the rapid surge in demand, the European Commission recognized the need for new regulations to eliminate obstacles to sustainable development, promote fair competition, and maintain consumer trust. The aim of this work was to analyze compliance with the labeling of organically produced products in Portugal's large retail sector, highlighting the role of the labels as a crucial source of information for consumers. A convenience collection of 179 samples was carried out, according to availability on the market, covering the following categories: Meat, Fish, Olive Oils and others, Fruit, Vegetables, Nuts and Seeds, Dairy Products, Cereals and Biscuits, Bakery and Wine, Beer, and Spirits. It concludes that the labeling flaws observed in the sample collected include the absence of a list of ingredients, incorrect location of the text of the organic logo and absence or illegibility of information regarding the code of the certifying body or place of production/cultivation and 56% of the labels in the sample were compliant. Clear and uniform labeling is essential to ensure transparency in the production process and the origin of organic products
