Insucesso escolar de crianças e jovens institucionalizadas

Insucesso escolar de crianças e jovens institucionalizadas

Abstract

The present study focus on the academic integration process of children and adolescents who are institutionalized. The study sample consists of 27 individuals from Obra da Imaculada Conceição e Santo António, attending all academic years, to whom were applied the following instruments: interviews and projective tests. The relevance of this matter has to do with the fact of Portugal being one of the European countries with the biggest rate of institutionalization, reason why foster homes are today a reality that can’t be ignored, given their social and educational dimensions. Most of these children don’t hope for a shoulder to cry on or a loving family that takes care of them, they are just on hold waiting for the next stage of the process, their freedom. Therefore, to guarantee a successful social and professional integration after the institutionalization, it is imperative that we enable this population of knowledge, skills and know-how. Foster institutions and schools are the main agents of socialization of these children and therefore the main ways of transmitting values and skills. Both of them need to work together to prevent their exclusion. The main problems that the global results identified were related with: cognitive difficulties, detachment, psychological and behavioral problems and truancy. Those results call our attention for the need to promote academic success by creating conditions for the well-being of these children and adolescents, developing personal, organizational and institutional support models that motivate them to invest in their own academic training.
