Abstract

ABSTRACT - Predictive and prognosis value study associated with Reactive Protein C in dogs with Parvovirusis - Canine Parvovirosis is an infectious viral disease, which affects mainly puppies under 6 months. This disease is associated with a type of gastroenteritis, being vomiting and hemorrhagic diarrhea the most common signs. The intestinal barrier of these animals is compromised, which may lead to a translocation of bacteria and their toxins into the bloodstream, increasing their susceptibility to secondary infections, and consequently to a Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) and even sepsis. In dogs, C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase protein widely used as a marker of inflammation and/or infection. It rapidly increases in concentration as a response to a stimulus reaching a peak in 24 to 48 hours. Sixty samples were then selected, of which 45 belonged to animals previously infected with Parvovirus (GP), and 15 from healthy animals (CG). The present study intended to compare the CRP concentrations of the GP and the CG, and subsequently correlate the CRP values of the animals infected with SIRS. The GP showed CRP concentrations higher than the CG, with respective mean values of 5.52mg/dL and 0.43mg/dL. These values also presented a statistically significant difference (p<0,05). It was also possible to verify a positive correlation between CRP and the presence of SIR (ρ=0.30). A value of C Reactive Protein/Albumin Ratio (CAR) was determined in order to reflect the presence of SIRS in canine Parvovirosis. The value obtained was 1.6 with a sensitivity of 93.5% and a specificity of 85.7%. Further studies are still needed to investigate the usefulness of CRP and CAR as markers for diagnosis, monitoring and prognosis. However, it is recommended that these markers are included in the panel of analysis of dogs with Parvovirosis. This will not only support early diagnosis, but will also be crucial to monitor the evolution of these patients, anticipate the occurrence of SIRS and provide prognostic indicators of the disease in question

A Parvovirose canina é uma doença infeciosa viral, que afeta especialmente cachorros com menos de 6 meses. Esta doença está associada a um quadro de gastroenterite, sendo o vómito e diarreia hemorrágica os sinais clínicos mais comuns. A barreira intestinal destes animais encontra-se comprometida, o que pode conduzir à translocação de bactérias e das suas endotoxinas para a corrente sanguínea, aumentado a suscetibilidade destes a infeções secundárias, e consequentemente a uma Síndrome de Resposta Inflamatória Sistémica (SRIS), e mesmo sépsis. Nos cães, a Proteína C Reativa (CRP) é uma proteína de fase aguda amplamente usada como marcador de inflamação e/ou infeção. A sua concentração aumenta rapidamente como resposta a um estímulo alcançando o pico em 24 a 48 horas. Foram selecionadas 60 amostras, das quais 45 pertenciam a animais previamente infetados com Parvovirose (GP), e 15 a animais saudáveis (GC). O presente estudo teve como objetivo realizar uma comparação das concentrações de CRP do GP e o GC, e posteriormente correlacionar os valores de CRP dos animais infetados com SRIS. O GP apresentou concentrações de CRP superiores ao GC, com médias respetivas de 5,52mg/dL e 0,43mg/dL. Estes valores apresentavam ainda uma diferença estatisticamente significativa (p<0,05). Foi ainda possível verificar uma correlação positiva entre a CRP e a presença de SRIS (ρ=0,30). Com o objetivo de refletir a presença de SRIS na Parvovirose canina foi determinado um valor de Rácio Proteína C Reativa/Albumina (CAR). O valor obtido foi de 1,6 com uma sensibilidade de 93,5% e uma especificidade de 85,7%. Ainda são necessários estudos adicionais para investigar a utilidade da CRP e do CAR como marcadores para diagnóstico, monitorização e prognóstico. No entanto, é recomendável incluir estes marcadores no painel de análises de cães com Parvovirose. Isto auxiliará no diagnóstico precoce da doença, mas também será crucial para monitorizar a evolução desses pacientes, antecipar a ocorrência de SRIS e fornecer indicadores prognósticos da doença em questão
