This project focuses on user experience design (UXD) applied to designing aroma interfaces. The aims are to develop a prototype communications protocol dubbed ‘Wi-Air’ to link software-controlled aroma diffusers and appliances, and to explore potential applications. UXD optimises the user experience by improving usability, accessibility, and convenience when interacting with scent diffusion systems or products. The project began with a survey of relevant scientific literature, exploratory interviews and the critical analysis of case studies demonstrating the feasibility of a diffuser prototype to work with a protocol or an SCS (Scent Compatibility System), that we named Wi·Air. This work also enabled the team to draw analogies and to establish and validate links between various disciplines. Key phases of the Wi·Air design process were reviewed by a panel of experts. The final review identified various innovations, including aroma diffusion control modes using new technologies, and their potential, for new applications.
