Funções de densidade populacional e estrutura espacial urbana

Abstract

The spatial distribution of urban population density is highly conditioned by the land rent. The different models of urban spatial structure establish assumptions that allow us to anticipate the spatial distribution of the land rent and consequently the population densities. The intertemporal and cross-section comparability of the population density functions allow us to characterise the urban growth and its estimation as well as to validate empirically theoretical models bringing up important steps in the explanation of the urban spatial structure. Beginning with the basic model of urban spatial structure, still used in many studies, we review the theoretical contributions and their implications on the determination of the functional form of density function. We give a special attention to the exponential function, to the inverse power function, to the linear gama function, the cubic polinomial function and we show the typical profile of an populational density function. The purpose of this work is to review theoretical basis and provide some empirical evidence for this field of study.
