Abstract

ABSTRACT - CLINICAL EVALUATION OF MARES AND FOALS: FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH FAILURE OF PASSIVE TRANSFER OF IMMUNITY IN FOALS - Foals have low levels of gamma globulin at birth, being dependent on the passive transfer of immunoglobulins from colostrum. Failure of Passive Transfer (FPT) of antibodies leads to immunodeficiency syndrome, associated with an increased risk of infection and death. The present study consisted on the evaluation of risk factors associated with FPT in foals. Thirty showjumping mares and their foals were used. Blood samples from foals were collected 24 hours after birth. Nine foals (30%) were classified with FPT based on serum IgG concentration < 400 mg/dl, determined by turbidimetric immunoassay. The evaluated factors, in mares were: age, parity, days of gestation, dystocia, retained placenta, month of delivery and assisted reproductive technologies. Mare were divided into 3 groups: mares undergoing artificial insemination technique (AI mares), recipient mares undergoing embryo transfer (ET mares) and recipient mares undergoing embryo transfer produced by ICSI technique (ICSI mares). The evaluated factors related to the foals were sex and general health score. Fisher's test and chi-square test were used, with a significance level of p<0.05. Mares that showed a normal placenta had a higher proportion of healthy foals (p=0.021). Results indicate that in March there is a higher proportion of foals developing FTIP (p<0.001). Therefore, foals born early in the season, during the coldest months of the year, were more likely to develop FTIP.
