Quando 11 dos 15 Estados-Membros da União Europeia fundaram em 1999 a Zona Euro, cumpria-se o objetivo último da União Económica e Monetária. Nesta dissertação, procura-se compreender como evoluíram as relações comerciais entre países após a introdução do Euro, testando a hipótese da emergência de regiões de países vizinhos mais integradas comercialmente dentro da Zona Euro. A partir dos resultados de estimações por mínimos quadrados, conclui-se que a adesão ao Euro contribuiu para uma integração comercial reforçada entre países vizinhos face aos restantes parceiros da Zona Euro, através da manutenção de tendências anteriores de aproximação ou da reversão parcial ou total de tendências anteriores de afastamento.

When 11 of 15 European Union Member States founded the Euro Area in 1999, they took the final step of the Economic and Monetary Union's integration plan. In the present dissertation, we seek to understand how trading among those countries evolved after the Euro's introduction by testing the arising of commercial integrated regions of neighboring countries' hypotheses. Using the least-squares method for estimations, we concluded that the adoption of the Euro has contributed to enhancing trade integration among neighboring countries compared with the other Member States, by maintaining approximation trends or by partially or totally reverting previous commercial departure trends.
