A cobertura mediática do Programa CPLP Audiovisual

Abstract

The trajectory of the Portuguese language was crossed by the secular mark of colonization, which culminated in Portuguese-speaking cultures spread throughout the world. To encourage cooperation between such different territories that today share the same official language, the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), created in 1996, promotes initiatives in different areas, including the audiovisual sector, focus of this investigation, analyzing the CPLP Audiovisual Program (PAV) in the light of media coverage based in Portuguese-speaking countries. The aim of this study was to understand how the PAV is portrayed in the media of the lusophone countries. To achieve this, mainly qualitative research was carried out, with a content analysis whose sample consisted of 205 news articles, found on the websites of 22 media outlets in seven CPLP countries: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe. The treatment of the data was supported by theoretical contribution on lusophony, journalism studies linked to newsworthiness criteria and agenda-setting, a contextualization of the CPLP's performance and the media systems of each Member State. The results of the analysis show that the strength of PAV’s digital expressiveness is related to the development of the media scenario of the countries involved: those with a greater sense of liberalization hold the largest volume of articles published on that subject. Private media focused on government actions to promote the PAV, while public media coverage, responsible for 68% of the sample, showed interest in the dissemination of documentaries and fiction produced within the program, also producing about the stages of public notices of PAV’s two previous editions. The main themes addressed by both were the coverage of events such as political-diplomatic meetings and film screenings, as well as a framework about the economic potential of the program, considering the strategic axis defined by the CPLP for cultural industries and creative economy.
