Abstract

Background: A relação entre a Osteoartrose do joelho (OAJ) e a prática desportiva está já amplamente documentada e justificada pela literatura. A prática desportiva parece agravar o desenvolvimento desta patologia ao longo da vida de um atleta. Esta investigação tem como objetivo estimar a prevalência da Osteoartrose do joelho e respetivos sintomas segundo tipo/características de determinadas modalidades numa população de ex-atletas, percebendo a sua origem. Métodos: Adultos com mais de 18 anos foram convidados a responder a um questionário online (Knee OA Pre- Screening Questionnaire – KOPS). Estatísticas descritivas e correlações de pearson foram usadas para análise, testes T independentes e análises ANOVA foram usadas para interpretar e comparar variáveis contínuas entre grupos. Critérios de Inclusão: Mais de 18 anos de idade; Prática desportiva de alta competição por 2 ou mais anos. Resultados: 393 voluntários (36,3 anos ± 13,5; IMC 25,05 kg/m² ± 4,14) participaram na investigação. 81 dos ex-atletas possuíam um score total do KOPS igual ou superior a 16 o que significa que 20,6% da amostra teve presença de OAJ (21,04 ±4,36). Conclusão: Concluímos que a OAJ está relacionada com o desporto de alta competição.

Background: The relationship between Knee Osteoarthritis and sports is well described in the literature. Sports seem to worsen the development of the disease during the life spam of an athlete. This investigation targets the prevalence of knee osteoarthritis and it’s symptoms according to certain characteristics of the sports studied in a population of ex-athletes, trying ate the same time to understand their origin. Methods: Adults with age ˃18 years old responded an online questionnaire (KOPS). Descriptive Statistics and pearson correlations were used and independent T tests and ANOVA analysis to interpret and compare continues variables between groups. Results: 393 volunteers (36,3 years ±13,5; IMC 25,05 kg/m² ±4,14) answered correctly. 81 of the ex-athletes showed a score ≥ 16 witch means 20,6% of the total sample have Knee Osteoarthritis (KOPS mean 21,04 ±4,36). Team sports had a prevalence of 22,4% ( KOPS mean 20,31 ± 4,39) and individual sports 15,4% (KOPS mean 21,20 ± 3,70)
