In a society which is getting increasingly more urban in a global scale, accompanied by an accelerated growth of the cities, it is expected that a large part of the opportunities as well as the problems are present precisely in these regions. In the Brazilian case, even with the peculiarities of each region, social inequality has been inherent in the country’s urbanization since it has started. The particularities of this process have meant that the roots of urbanpoverty are constantly present until the present day, mostly represented by slums. In this sense, based on a review of the literature as well as an analysis of available data, this dissertation discusses the specific vulnerabilities observed in urban poverty in the case of Brazil, by adopting a multidimensional approach which seeks to go beyond a solely income-based perspective.
