A empatia no design

Abstract

ABSTRACT: This research focuses on the value of empathy in Design to understand and describe the social problem of the elderly person's experience in the context of a nursing home and for the redesign of the shared interaction between the elderly person, the caregiver, and the multiple elements that make up that experience. The relevance of the chosen theme is linked to the current demographic trends, which unequivocally demonstrate that we are an aging society. Therefore, it seemed appropriate to direct the intervention to the issues of wellbeing and socially acquired assessment about the elderly person, while trying to adjust the social contribution to the needs imposed by the reality we live. Of course, the quality of the interaction between the caregiver and the elderly effects the quality of the service provided and, consequently, the well-being of both parts coexisting in the same 􏰅􏰉􏰡􏰈􏰆􏰍􏰉􏰎􏰅􏰉􏰇􏰟 􏰨􏰅 􏰈􏰉􏰇􏰅􏰉􏰌 􏰇􏰍 􏰠􏰍􏰁􏰖􏰏 environment. We intend to focus on the significance of the understanding of the need, times and value of the elderly, activating conscious caregivers, who are motivated during the fulfillment of their tasks and focused on responding primarily to the users’ needs. Through a mixed interventionist and non-interventionist methodology, with qualitative basis, but some quantitatively treated data, this research proposes to analyze the experience of the elderly in the institution and to understand their relationship/ interaction with the caregivers, so exploring the breadth of the concept of Design. Despite privileging the Empathic Design as the 􏰠􏰖􏰉􏰌􏰋􏰎􏰅􏰉􏰇􏰋􏰐 􏰋􏰆􏰅􏰋 􏰍􏰠 fundamental area of this investigation, an effective redesign of this shared experience will only be possible through the combination with environment design, services design, product design and/or communication design. It is expected to evidence the value that the intervention of Design can have in the sense of social contribution by developing a set of strategies to facilitate the empathic relationship and the quality of human interaction between the elderly and the caregivers, aiming to improve the service provided and the well-being of both parties.
