Abstract

With te economic globalization, the shortening of product life cicies, the mergence of knowledge economy and the importance of innovation while competitiveness factor, multinational companies have to rebuild resources and processes to compete on a global scale. This phenomena implies an evolution of the role of local subsidiaries of multinational companies. Since the 80's, with the paradim of the knowlefge economy, interdependence gains a growing role in the ways multinationals operate, and subsidiary roles become more complex and strategically important to the multinational as a whole, both as inovation cetres ou "sensing" actors to detect market trend which can be exlploited on a worldwide basis. Ifs in this context that the figure of the "center of excellence" emerge: subdidiaries with distinct competencies of generalized usage whithin the multinational network. The purose of this thesis is to better understand the way how centres of excelence evolve and which are the factors which can enable the establishment in Portugal of "centres of excellence of multinational corporations.
