A presente investigação teórica debruça-se sobre a possível relação e disposição e adequação da arquitectura para representar a memória do passado. Procura-se compreender o valor que têm as construções do passado e em que medida o seu contributo é essencial para o Ser humano. Em primeiro lugar, pretendemos responder à questão que envolve o conceito de memória — porque razão é essencial para o ser humano o reconhecimento de uma origem, a sua ? No processo de procura de uma teoria plausível que explique esta necessidade humana, procuramos reconhecer à sua relação próxima com as coisas construídas — a Arquitectura. Que importância tem, para o ser humano, a Arquitectura existente? Porque razão nos opomos à sua destruição e, consequente substituição por algo que é novo? O que representam para nós, essas arquitecturas que levantam o debate sobre a continuidade ou a sua oposição? Pretende-se, portanto, estudar os temas enunciados e responder às perguntas formuladas e, em seguida, compreender o processo que consiste na construção de um discurso mental sobre a intervenção em preexistências. Na procura de respostas, recorremos ao estudo de referências teóricas e históricas que reflectem sobre a memória e a continuidade em arquitectura. Investigamos dois casos da arquitectura portuguesa, ambos parte do legado arquitectónico de Fernando Távora: a Reconversão do Mosteiro de Santa Marinha da Costa em Pousada, em Guimarães e a Casa dos 24, no Porto. Estas duas intervenções são distintas, permitem compreender as possibilidades de intervenção no contexto das preexistências e, sobretudo, responder distintamente à questão que se coloca ao longo da nossa investigação: De que forma pode, a arquitectura, continuar a memória da humanidade. Que importância tem essa memória para a construção da sua identidade e por conseguinte, da sociedade? A permanência e estabilidade da memória é fruto da sua continuidade. Este mecanismo intelectual é possível no reconhecimento essencial da arquitetura e na sua posterior salvaguarda. Como? É esta a dificuldade que tentaremos deslindar, pelo processo mental da abstracção, em paralelo Memória e Continuidade A Essência da intervenção em preexistências a partir de Fernando Távora Maria João Cunha, MIARQ, IRE, FAUL, 06 Novembro 2020 II com a nossa análise histórica e crítica, e confrontando-a com a de Fernando Távora. É importante referir que o tema da memória e da sua continuidade em arquitectura é vasto, não tendo sido nossa intenção encontrar respostas metodológicas para a intervenção em arquitectura preexistente, mas sim, reconhecer nessas intervenções o que é realmente essencial e primordial à intervenção, para que à posteriori, a acção sobre essa arquitectura possa trazernos, a nós , ao Ser humano, o que dela é essencial à nossa memória.

ABSTRACT: The present theoretical research seeks to unravel the possible relationship and adequablity of architecture to represent the memory of the past. We seek to understand the value of the constructions of the past and the extent to which their contribution to the human being is essential. In the first place, we want to answer the question involving the concept of memory - why is it essential for the human being to recognize an origin, his origin? In the process of searching for a plausible theory that explains this human need, we want to recognize its close relationship with the things built - architecture. How important for the human being is the existing architecture. Why are we opposed to its destruction and consequent replacement by something new? What do these architectures represent to us, raising the debate about continuity or opposing it? The aim is therefore to understand this process, which consists in the construction of a mental discourse about intervention on pre-existences. In the search for answers, we resort to the study of theoretical and historical references that highlight and reflect on our subject of study. We investigate two case studies of Portuguese architecture, both part of Fernando Távora's architectural legacy: the Reconversion into Hotel of the Monastery of Santa Marinha da Costa, in Guimarães and Casa dos 24, in Porto. The two distinct interventions, allow us to understand the possibilities of intervention in the context of pre-existences and, above all, provide distinct answers to the questions that arise throughout our research: How can architecture contribute to continuing the memory of Humanity? How important is this memory for the construction of its identity and therefore of society? The permanence and stability of memory is the fruit of its continuity, is this intellectual mechanism valid in the recognition of the essence of architecture and its subsequent safeguarding? How? This is the difficulty that we will try to unravel, through the mental process of abstraction, in parallel with our historical and critical analysis, and confronting it with that of Fernando Távora.
