Abstract

The aim of this work is to develop a computer simulation (SimCitri) for Planococcus citri (Risso) population trends in citrus orchards under Leptomastix dactylopii Howard parasitism. The rate of change for simulation values occurs in “jumps” identified as “one hour”. During this period, temperature is constant. SimCitri’s background is based on a bibliographic review on structure and characteristics of models and simulations applied to entomology and on mathematical studies on experimental data for biology and behaviour of both P. citri and L. dactylopii. The simulation was developed in VISUAL BASIC 6 and is composed of an input data form and an output result form. The use of arrays to simulate insect development allowed population development gradation. SimCitri results show that dispersal is a basic condition for P. citri outbreak. After release in the orchard, L. dactylopii density reduction can affect parasitism efficiency. A photoperiod with less hours of light and higher constant temperature are more favourable to parasitism. Under certain simulation conditions, SimCitri’s P. citri and L. dactylopii density output can be too high when compared to experimental data.
