Abstract

The goal of this investigation is to analyse how shift workers in the transport sector juggle their job with their family life. This is a relevant issue, since family, as well as work, are central in individuals’ lives. This research has the following question as its starting point: how do shift workers in an organization in the transport sector balance their professional and family life? To answer this question, we used a qualitative research strategy and conducted a case study in an organization operating in this sector, based on seventeen semi-structured interviews with male and female workers who work in different types of shifts. These interviews were subsequently analyzed using content analysis and the MAXQDA, version 18. The analysis allows to conclude that these workers’ experiences are complex and varied. Complex, on the one hand, since workers associate advantages and disadvantages to shift work regarding its implications on their work and family life. On the other hand, the way in which shift work is lived by workers depends on shifts themselves, their family situation and their spouses’ professional situation. In addition, the testimonies collected show that that the distribution of domestic chores between men and women is more unbalanced than care work. Some male interviewees expressed their desire to be active participants in the lives of their children. The use of paid and unpaid care in this field is seen as fundamental, reducing the tension between work and family.
