Abstract

A business exists in a specific context and the emergence of a new business involves a process of insertion into a pre-existing context. If the context is seen as a network, the process of insertion into the network involves continuous (inter)actions and not just an isolated act. Industrial networks result from complex interactions, adaptations, and investments between companies and companies over time (Hakansson and Ford, 2002). The process of insertion in the network involves the construction of an identity simultaneously with the process of establishing relationships with the different actors of the network, namely suppliers and customers. The aim of the present study ,that involves two start-ups more specifically, EIDT and EGG Electronics, is to analyze the process of emerging businesses and the evolution of the business portfolio, taking into account the nature and the functions of relationships that are monitored with various actors in the network. In conclusion, the portfolio of both start-ups under study suffered some changes during the time horizon covered by the present study. The first couple relationships revealed in various ways over time, some expressing a higher relevance and others a lower relevance. The establishment of a combination of direct and indirect functions, guaranteed by one or several relationships, stands out.
