Authors: Cardoso, João Paulo Carreira;

Abstract

This dissertation focus on the creation of trademarks and standard certification (both national and international) by the 100 biggest companies in the outermost Portuguese regions, Madeira and Azores. The study of these components, in addition to the main ones, can provide a new light into the innovation capability of a company. Although both Portuguese outermost regions are service-based economies, results show that the top 100 companies in Azores are dominated by the secondary sector, while Madeira's top 100 is dominated by the tertiary sector. These results can, in turn, be linked to the reason why Azores presents higher levels of standard certification and trademarks. Note, however, that that's the region with most outliers. If compared to other outermost region economy, the Canárias, both Portuguese regions present lower levels of trademark creation and overall revenue. This dissertation suggests that, as time goes by, the difference between Portuguese regions regarding standard certifications and trademark creation can decrease, as a result of more standard certifications being created and the costumers giving even more relevance to the trademark question. As so, the use of metrics regarding trademark and standard certification can be considered important and valid to evaluate a company's innovation capabilities. In addition, more support by the local and central govern can be proved worthy in creating companies more competitive and more distinct to the general public, in the long run.
