Abstract

Este trabalho tem o tema da densificação das cidades como elemento central de estudo. No início do século XXI mais de metade da população mundial vive em áreas urbanas e as previsões indicam que essa percentagem continue a aumentar. A importância do aumento explosivo da população urbana a nível mundial, designadamente nos países em vias de desenvolvimento, tem levantado algumas questões relacionadas com o crescimento das áreas urbanas. Abordam-se assim temas como a importância do espaço público, da mobilidade, das infra-estruturas, da sustentabilidade urbana e, em última instância, o conceito de cidade compacta, defendida por muitos dos estudiosos do urbanismo, como uma solução para as cidades do futuro. Neste contexto, foi seleccionada a cidade de Macau como caso de estudo. Trata-se de uma das cidades mais densificadas do mundo, suportando um elevado crescimento demográfico nas últimas décadas. Um caso particularmente interessante de análise devido ao seu peculiar desenvolvimento e às suas características geográficas, visto tratar-se de uma península, sem possibilidade de expansão. Este trabalho finaliza com a elaboração de uma estratégia urbana para uma área específica da península de Macau, denominada de Porto Interior. Esta zona é objecto de um esquema estratégico, articulando temas como reestruturação da estrutura edificada, mobilidade e espaço público.

ABSTRACT: This work has the theme of densification of cities as a central element of study. At the beginning of the 21st century, more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas and forecasts indicate that this percentage will continue to increase. The importance of the explosive increase in urban population worldwide, particularly in developing countries, has raised some issues related to the growth of urban areas. Approaching themes such as the importance of public space, mobility, infrastructure, urban sustainability and, ultimately, the concept of a compact city, advocated by many urbanism scholars as a solution for future. In this context, the city of Macau was selected as a case study. It is one of the densest cities in the world, supporting a high population growth in the last decades. A particularly interesting case of analysis due to its peculiar development and its geographical characteristics, since it is a peninsula, with limited possibility of expansion. This work ends with the elaboration of an urban strategy for a specific area of the Macau peninsula, called the Porto Interior. This area is the subject of a strategic scheme, articulating themes such as restructuring of the built structure, mobility and public space.
