Innovative initiatives and major determinants present in their development process have been explored in a large scale in subsidiaries within multinational companies. Previous research about the impact of innovative initiatives on subsidiaries and on their MNC?s has recognized that such initiatives have positive consequences for firms? competitiveness. According to these empirical findings, and due to the lack of investigation about this theme, we attempt to explore the context that promotes innovative initiatives in different models of international activity, specifically in franchising and joint-venture operations, with the propose to identify the differences and similarities in their innovative context. The present work reports a qualitative study conducted at two case studies about two companies of retail sector: a franchisee firm and a joint venture. We identified the same types of innovative initiative in both cases however we concluded there are differences between the models in terms of propensity to innovate, mainly due to the level of autonomy in geographically dispersed unit and the entrepreneurial characteristics of top managers. It is therefore concluded, the franchisee unit is more conducive to the development of innovative initiatives.
