Abstract

Over time, the importance of Human Resource Management within organizations has been growing. However, with the evolution of technology, the practice of employee monitoring has raised some issues in the information confidentiality and data protection, which refers to a concept that is very present nowadays: the social engineering. The aim of this work is to relate the process of employee monitoring to the concept of social engineering, focusing on the ethical issues that may arise in the monitoring process and on the privacy and trust issues in the relationship between employer and employee, regarding this practice of Human Resource Management. To achieve the goals proposed, a study was carried out with 12 participants, Human Resource directors and managers from different companies and in several areas, to which were applied semi-structured interviews that were later analysed through the content analysis technique. The results showed a possible relationship between employee monitoring and social engineering, in particular in terms of technology manipulation and according with their common goal: the access to information.
