Abstract

Most manufactures implement one or more manufacturing practices to improve operational performance. Several studies examined the synergetic effect of joint implementation of these practices, but their results are conflicting. Some researchers found support that joint implementation is associated with performance improvements, others found that simultaneous implementation does not have the above effect. Still others found that is not necessary extensive implementation of all practices to archieve high performance and to be competitive. This study investigates the different configurations of manufacturing practices that are best suited to high, and not high, operational performance. Four production practices are studied: total quality management (TQM), just-in-time (JIT), total productive maintenance (TPM) and human resource management (HRM). The data came from a survey of 134 portuguese manufacturing in food industry and the results from fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) provide support for the existence of there configurations of practices sufficient for high operational performance (HRM*TQM or HRM*JIT or TQM*TPM*JIT) and two configurations sufficient for not high operational performance (~TQM*~TPM*~JIT or ~TQM*~JIT*HRM).
