Abstract

ABSTRACT - The effect of fresh or thawed colostrum administration in calves - Proper colostrum management is an important feature in newborn health and can have consequences in the short, medium and long-term. Scours in calves is one of the consequences derived from the poor colostrum management. This work was committed to study the relation between thawed or fresh colostrum and scours prevalence in a dairy farm in the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova. This study took into account the existence, or not, of a prophylactic plan against scours, which in this case was the vaccination of pregnant cows with Lactovac C®, comparing subsequently the existence of a relation between scours prevalence and immunized/not-immunized colostrum administration. The study included 49 animals divided by four groups. The animals which received not-immunized colostrum were placed in the first two groups (Group1 - thawed colostrum; Group2 - fresh colostrum), and the animals that received immunized colostrum were placed in the last two (Group3 - thawed colostrum; Group4 - fresh colostrum). Animals were only admitted to the study if they were fed good quality colostrum, measured by colostrometer. Every animal serum total proteins were measured by refractometer, proving that, for a 5,5g/dL threshold, 100% of the animals had a well-successful passive transfer. The results obtained as to the vaccine efficacy demonstrated a statistical difference, both in thawed (Group1/Group3 – p=0,046), and fresh colostrum (Group2/Group4 – p=0,002). In what concerns the difference between thawed and fresh colostrum groups, we observed no statistical difference between the immunized colostrum groups (Group3/Group4 – p=0,055), or in the not immunized colostrum groups (Group1/Group2 – p=1), noting however a strong downward trend of diarrhea in animals administered with fresh immunized colostrum. Scour agents (Escherichia coli, Cryptosporidium parvum, Rotavirus and Coronavirus) were searched in the immunized groups but only Cryptosporidium parvum was detected, suggesting vaccination effectiveness.
