Abstract

ABSTRACT : Architectural heritage is part of daily life, especially in the european context, where contemporary history takes place. Old European cities are whiteness of a main legacy, that should be classified and preserved, regardless of its’ size or materialization. These actions can be made in different scales and forms, from something endurable and vast, like the landscape, or an old city center, to something so ethereal like fado. Amongst this reality are the ancient convents and today’s hospitals, in the Santana hill, in center of Lisbon. These classified buildings that are going to be deactivated need to respond to new paradigms. It’s under the subject of architectural rehabilitation that the Santa Marta Convent its reconversion into a hotel, is going to take place. This work seeks the identity of the building, through the reinterpretation of the first matrix of the convent, the one used to raise it up. It also aims to release it, from the hospital spaces created years later. Preserving, according to this approach, the building unique spatial characteristics and simultaneously, regarding the convent surroundings’, its history, its sacred typology and its own architecture.
