Abstract

ABSTRACT - STUDY OF THE PASSIVE TRANSFER OF IMMUNITY IN CALVES, IN GUIMARÃES - One of the most important factors for the future health and productivity of calves is an adequate colostrum management and the prevention of Failure of Passive Transfer (FPT). The goal of this research were to analyze the passive transfer of immunity in Guimarães, through the measurement of blood protein of calves, and to evaluate some of the management methods. Some of the factors analyzed were: the gender of the calf, the vaccination program before calving, the separation of the calf from the mother, the colostrum management, particularly the quantity fed, the time to first feeding and the method of feeding. In reviewing the measurements of blood protein, high prevalence of FTP was obtained (70%). The evaluation of the management methods of the farms showed some deficiencies in the protocols that can justify the high incidence of FTP. The quantity of colostrum administered, the time to first feeding and the method of feeding had a significant impact in the concentration of blood proteins in the calves. It can be concluded that the farmers should improve the calf management program to minimize the neonatal mortality. The establishment of such a program will improve the economic situation of the farm.
