Arquitetura curativa

Authors: Barros, Verónica Bastos;

Arquitetura curativa

Abstract

Architecture has a huge impact on our lives, as we spend more than 90% of our time within architectural spaces. As such, we can state that architecture allows not only to protect human beings from threats from the outside world, but it can also protect our minds. At least that's what we hope for. However, do we really know how architecture influences our mental health? Over the years, mental health has been sidelined and has gone so far as to lock the mentally ill in institutions that looked like prisons. Over time, the Humanity evolved and mental well-being has been considered one of the greatest treasures a person can have. Therefore, and with the evolution of science and technology, new disciplines have shown interest in mental health, one of which being architecture. Since there is already a considerable amount of information on how architecture influences mental health, information in most cases unreliable, the task of this thesis is precisely to verify the scientific truth and the applicability of this information. The intension here is not to provide a treatise on the relationship between mental health and architecture, but only to verify the rigor of the multiple statements that circulate in the field. Unfortunately, the credible propositions that we found were few, which reveals a huge field for future investigations.
