Type Design

Harmonizing Cultures - Morocco and Portugal
Authors: Talil, Soufiane;
Abstract

This research aims to harmonize fonts through conducting extensive research on typography and calligraphy. The emphasis will be on recognizing terms that have originated from Arabic and Portuguese, particularly within the Moroccan vernacular and its connection to Portuguese. The thesis will also explore cultural features in terms of decoration with Arabic calligraphy. The history of al-andalus, Islamic presence in Europe and its impact on the region will be studied. Additionally, the study will also focus on how the Moroccan dialect has been influenced by the mother tongue of settlers, which has led to the survival of Portuguese words in the daily Moroccan dialect to this date. The goal is to create an Arabic and a Latin digital typeface that has a familiar form and style by studying the Arabic typefaces that were used at that time in the cultural and civilizational landmarks and to bring together the bond between Morocco and Portugal. The project aims to showcase the love and interaction of two beautiful identities, creating an exciting outcome to show peace and diversity.
