Suplementos alimentares no doente oncológico

Abstract

Cancer is currently one of the main causes of death worldwide. Every year around 2.6 million people are diagnosed with this disease, and consequently undergo cancer treatments that have a major impact on their quality of life. Managing an oncological disease itself is complicated for patients who, in addition, have to deal with a large number of adverse effects of cancer therapy. These can be immediate, such as gastrointestinal problems (which are highly prevalent) with a major impact on the patient's diet and nutritional status, and/or long-term effects such as osteoporosis, among others. Despite the rapid evolution of anti-neoplastic therapy, it is necessary to invest in alternatives and solutions that provide more comfort to the patient and improve their quality of life in terms of the adverse effects of this therapy. Dietary supplements have become increasingly popular on the market, with great consumer demand. Some patients seek these complementary therapies to improve symptoms associated with cancer. Some dietary supplements appear to play a beneficial role in some of the adverse effects of cancer therapy. Over the years, studies have shown the efficacy of some supplements, such as glutamine, omega-3, calcium and vitamin D, etc. While for some supplements their efficacy and safety is better understood, there is still a long way to go when it comes to making recommendations for supplements to relieve some of these conditions. Although there are studies that support these benefits, not all of them are robust clinical trials with an adequate number of participants from which strong recommendations can emerge. The role of the health professional is fundamental when it comes to gauging the possible efficacy and, above all, the safety of this type of product and its use by patients.
