Parque Ribeirinho dos Descobrimentos

Lagos resiliente e sustentável
Authors: Costa, Daniel Maia Martins;

Parque Ribeirinho dos Descobrimentos

Abstract

The city of Lagos, in Portugal, along with other coastal cities around the world, faces the imminent threat of climate change. In the coming decades, Lagos is projected to confront two major water-related challenges: prolonged drought and reduced rainfall on the one hand and rising sea levels and floods on the other. This challenge, viewed in this project as an opportunity, will greatly impact the city’s riverfront, highlighting the urgent need for proactive interventions to protect the city through early adaptation. Therefore, the proposal aims to address urban resilience in the face of climate change, with a particular focus on the requalification of public spaces, urban drainage, and the promotion of new social interactions and outdoor activities. To achieve these goals of reconnecting the old city with the riverfront, enhancing urban resilience, and creating protective measures, this project proposes a new linear park along the Bensafrim riverfront. The park will encompass a new and requalified public space, green areas, new urban paths for pedestrians and cyclists, and a Resilient Center for water recycling. This project is expected to revive the riverfront, pay homage to the memory of the place, and implement adaptive strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change.
