Abstract

Anxiety disorders have grown rapidly in recent years and have a major impact on a person’s life in different areas of their functioning, affecting them socially, personally, occupationally and more. The aim of this research is to develop a product design solution in the form of a device used to help control the symptoms of anxiety attacks in adults, based on research in the fields of psychology and psychiatry into conventional and alternative treatments for controlling the symptoms of anxiety disorders. The dissertation is divided into three phases: the exploratory phase, the generative phase and the evaluative phase. Taking into account the practical aspect of the project, a mixed methodology will be used, integrating quantitative, qualitative and design methods. To carry out the exploratory phase, a literature review was carried out in order to understand anxiety disorders and their respective differences, their forms of diagnosis and treatment. Surveys were carried out with patients diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, in order to understand the impact of these disorders on the individual’s quality of life and well-being, and any existing products for controlling anxiety symptoms. During the generative phase, based on the information gathered in the previous phase, the hypothesis was the hypothesis was outlined with the product definitions, in order to develop design solutions which allowed the product to be used in a simple and easily accessible way for the individual at the moment they felt the first symptoms of anxiety. The prototype produced during the generative phase was tested with individuals diagnosed with anxiety and presented to psychology and psychiatry professionals for evaluation and suggestions for possible improvements. We have come to our final considerations after possible changes to the project, leaving recommendations for future research and the consequent contribution to knowledge and society.
