Ao longo das últimas décadas, tanto em Portugal como no resto do mundo considerado desenvolvido, temos vindo a assistir a uma mudança de paradigmas. Fatores como o aumento da esperança média de vida e o envelhecimento populacional, criam pressões no Estado Social e na forma como os edifícios respondem e se adaptam às necessidades desta nova estrutura populacional. Mais ainda, a rápida urbanização, em contexto pós-revolução industrial que levou a uma diminuição de áreas livres para construção, bem como à degradação de parte do edificado mais antigo, leva a uma necessidade cada vez maior de reabilitar e renovar as construções existentes. Num mundo em que cada vez mais as necessidades de ontem não são as de hoje e em que a sustentabilidade ganha um peso cada vez maior, a arquitetura não pode ser indiferente à mudança dos tempos e deve acompanhar esta evolução. Neste contexto, surge o interesse pelos conceitos da reversibilidade e flexibilidade como forma de pensar e projetar em arquitetura, sobretudo quando há necessidade de intervir em edifícios antigos. Neste âmbito, foi tomado como objeto de estudo o edifício que albergava a antiga Manutenção Militar do Exército português, já que este continha na sua génese os requisitos necessários para a aplicação desta abordagem. Assim sendo, propõe-se no decorrer do trabalho uma intervenção arquitetónica de reabilitação enquadrada nos princípios da reversibilidade e flexibilidade, que tenha, em paralelo, a possibilidade de englobar na sua existência uma comunidade intergeracional isto é., que permita um diálogo entre pessoas de diferentes faixas etárias, através da partilha de experiências e colaboração entre os seus intervenientes. Relativamente à metodologia, fizeram parte do processo de trabalho diferentes etapas. Partiu-se da teoria, com a definição do tema e questões fundamentais que partiram para a recolha da informação necessária à reflexão da problemática. Desta culminou uma resposta prática mediante o projeto de arquitetura e, por conseguinte, a concretização do trabalho. O resultado procurou enquadrar os conceitos teóricos acima descritos com a sua aplicação na arquitetura, tentando assim demonstrar os seus benefícios para responder às questões do mundo moderno. A reversibilidade permitiu explorar soluções com novos conteúdos programáticos, mantendo e garantindo a identidade, a preservação e a valorização das pré-existências, bem como ainda prever possíveis futuras reconversões numa ótica de sustentabilidade.

Over the last few decades, both in Portugal and in the rest of the developed world, we have been witnessing a change in the paradigms. Factors such as the increase in average life expectancy and population aging create pressure on the Social State and the way in which buildings respond and adapt to the needs of this new population structure. Furthermore, rapid urbanization in a post-industrial revolution context led to a reduction in free areas for construction, as well as the degradation of part of the oldest buildings, which, in turn leads to an increasing need to rehabilitate and renew existing buildings. In a world where yesterday's needs are increasingly different from today's needs and where sustainability is increasingly important, architecture cannot be indifferent to changing times and must keep up with this evolution. In this context, interest in the concepts of reversibility and flexibility arises as a way of thinking and designing in architecture, especially when there is a need to intervene in old buildings. In this context, the building that housed the former Military Maintenance of the Portuguese Army was taken as the object of study, as it contained in its genesis the necessary requirements for the application of this approach. Therefore, in the course of the work, we propose an architectural rehabilitation intervention framed in the principles of reversibility and flexibility, which has, in parallel, the possibility of encompassing in its existence an intergenerational community, that is, which allows a dialogue between people of different age groups, through the sharing of experiences and collaboration between those involved. Regarding the methodology, different stages were part of the work process. The starting point was theory, with the definition of the theme and fundamental questions that led to the collection of the information necessary to reflect on the problem. This culminated in a practical response through the architectural project and, consequently, the completion of the work. The result sought to frame the theoretical concepts described above with their application in architecture, thus trying to demonstrate their benefits in answering the questions of the modern world. Reversibility allowed us to explore solutions with new programmatic content, maintaining and guaranteeing the identity, preservation and valorization of pre-existences, as well as predicting possible future reconversions from a sustainability perspective.
