Abstract

Since the 1960s, the interest in safeguarding and reusing industrial heritage sites has emerged in urban development and city revitalization programs. Areas that, were once full of innovation and movement, are now only a tenuous and degraded portrait of that past life. These urban voids appear as an opportunity to create solutions that solve the problems initiated by de-industrialization in their surrounding areas. The former Lusalite and Gist-Brocades factories, in Cruz Quebrada - Dafundo, fit into this same theme. Abandoned and degrading in a remarkable riverside terrain, in the Jamor valley, they provide an exemplary basis for promoting the development in the villa. The program thus arises from three premises: firstly, to revitalize the location of Cruz Quebrada; reactivate the collective spaces of the factories, preserving their identity and memory; and re-establishing proximity to the riverfront, strengthening man’s contact with water. The achievement of these objectives is supported by the interventions in the Gist-Brocades factory using CoWorking and office spaces; by the creation of a multifunctional equipment with cultural spaces, auditorium and a library; and by the re-conection and re-desing of the riverfront.
